Subject
A view from the foreign press on the 1967 Intercontinental Cup
Description
Clarín reprints foreign press accounts on the matches between Celtic and Rácing. In Scotland, the press became indignant about the behavior of Rácing players: a “bunch of ruffians”, “Celtic try to protect itself against the brutal tactics of the team from Buenos Aires”. Rácing, they continue, cannot enjoy a title earned this way—mostly described as a war between both teams and a weak-willed Paraguayan referee. From Uruguay, universal condemnation in the local press is directed at for both teams for their behavior. “No fue una final, fue una verguenza”. “Farsa de partido y estafa al publico”. Basically, the Uruguayans believed that fútbol lost and fans witnessed a lack of discipline and abuse of the sport. In other words, bad intentions, deceptive play—the losers are the fans.
