The recurring theme any time Argentine journalists compared their fútbol with the Brazilian approach to the game was that the Brazilians possessed plenty of flair, and skill, but lacked mental fortitude and the necessary toughness to finish a game. Although race does not seem to play a factor, one cannot help but consider race when reading about the lack of mental fortitude of the Brazilians (which goes back to the racialized portrayals of Brazilians in the 1920s as simpletons, savage, and uncivilized).
