Title

Los gorilas también dividieron la universidad

Subject

Comments from a previous head of a university on the current problems facing the system of higher learning. As a Peronist sympathizer, the use of "gorila" denotes an overt criticism of anti-Peronists who he felt are just as culpable of using education as political tool

Description

The author (who was expelled under the military because of ties to Peronism and outspoken nature about human rights) cites two main (and historic) problems with the university system: the call for autonomy and the fradulent restructuring that routinely takes place. He sees any call for autonomy from the government as a way for professors to institutionalize the wrong sort of "professionalism": professional politics and militarism. Professors should be professional educators, no more. Instead, professors with outside agendas adopt a "continuismo" that politicizes higher education. The solution is for the government to intervene and appoint the four or six professors who are widely esteemed for their dedication to education as leaders who can de-politicize universities and end the deep divisions. No one, according to the author, should have ever been forced out of a teaching job because of politics. Instead, the tenured system should be reconsidered if it leads to a stagnant system that does not place education as first priority.
