An analysis of the Peronist decade

Of note is a smart analysis of what Peron was able to achieve and what he failed to accomplish. In his 10 years of power he gave a singular voice to the working class by making it a political player but also because his overtures led to an embrace of immigrants that led to an "'argentinización' y una 'deseuropeización' del proletario." Where Peron failed was in stripping the landed oligarchy of its economic base, even if he could limit their political influence. As a result, Peron resorted to repression as a way to stave off pressure from his political enemies...especially as his position became tenuous after the death of Eva Duarte de Peron and a growing dependency on foreign purchases of Argentine goods like beef and oil. peron could either eliminate the gains of the workers (like Stalin) or continue to seek foreign buyers. The final nail in his coffin was not the precarious state of Argentine oil exports, but rather continual tension with the Catholic Church: an uneasy ally up until then.
