En defensa del fútbol

Title

En defensa del fútbol

Subject

A commentary on officiating, fair play, and stadium attendance.

Description

Acknowledging that the behavior of some fans has alienated many from attending matches at stadiums, this commentary also criticizes the behavior or players who feign injury as a tactic. The author lauds the performance of foreign referees who are able to keep the game moving by forcing 'injured' players to leave the field of play and thus maintain the flow of the game. This commentary closes by saying that a free-flowing match might entice people to reurn to stadiums feeling that they actually paid for 90 minutes of soccer. This is helpful because it is a cause perhaps ignored by scholars interested in understanding the decline of soccer attendance.
