Fir Park Team in South America; Bobby Ferrier on Argentine Football: Barbed Wire Round the Field

Subject

Coverage of Motherwell's trip to South America

Description

A brief update on Motherwell's last game in Argentina (a 2-0 loss to Boca Juniors) and its first in Uruguay (a 2-0 win over a Uruguayan select team). The second article offers an account by player Bobby Ferrier on the conditions he and his teammates faced in their early losses. Although he did not blame the field (which the team enjoyed in their practices), they found the heat and drier conditions difficult to navigate. Ferrier also noticed something foreign to Scottish players: five-foot tall fences with barbed wire around the field, which he believed kept the 35-50,000 spectators at bay when Argentina scored, or from attacking the referee for his decisions. He also noted that the local fans spent about five minutes waving their handkerchiefs after Argentine scored. Ferrier ends by promising fans back home better performances and assurances they are taking the games in South America seriously.
