What the paper could now report was that the other cabinet member, Dr. Cereijo, offered to mediate the dispute and bring and end to the strike. The mediation by Cereijo worked. Players agreed to end their strike with assurances that AFA and FAA representatives would specifically address the key concerns by players. According to the reporters present in the room, players experessed their concerns over the hostility and unwillingness to cooperate exhibited by club directors. Seeing no end in sight to the strike, Nicolini offered his resignation as AFA president so he could focus on his work as minister in the Perón government. In a meeting with AFA members that afternoon, representatives from the clubs gave Nicolini their full backing and asked him to reconsider his resignation. In the letter, the players union points out that the first formal grieveances they issues to AFA took place in 1945. Their decision to strike stemmed for the unwillingness of club directors to negotiate in good faith, the slow process at AFA, and the inability of government officials to intervene and find a solution. The FAA also points out that AFA only recognized it as a formal players union in April of 1948 after players were ready to strike at the beginning of the season. The immediate cause, however, dealt with the increasing hostility and refusal to negotiate by club officials.
