Subject
Masculinity and fanaticism mix in this cartoon
Description
Independiente's nickname is the "diablos rojos" (red devils), here wooing a woman while the mascots of Boca Juniors and River Plate show off their muscles as they get ready to fight each other. Independiente is thus able to court the woman by taking advantage of men who ignore her by fighting. It also shows how masculinity is not just about strength, but also intelligence and craftiness. There is also a subtle nod to the devil tempting "Eve". It is worth noting that the fĂștbol season is often depicted as a woman, thus the male mascots vie for her attention. This cartoon shows how fans often emasculated rival fans by "taking" their rivals' women.
