Foreign observer ranks Argentina among the world's best teams
Description
Vernon Morgan, a British Olympic representative who witnessed some of Argentina's international friendlies against European team, ranks it and Uruguay among the world's best teams. This is one of many examples where the press furthered the notion that Argentina was a preeminent practitoner of the sport. Whether there was any validity to this argument, Argentina had not competed on a global scale since 1930. As a result, Argentines heard for decades about the quality of their fútbol without participating in tournaments to prove this belief. In 1958, the shock of Argentina's early elimination put an end to such notions of superiority.
