The Lima tragedy, one of the darkest moments in world soccer, took place in a match between Argentinean and Peruvian youth teams trying to qualify for the Olympics. That same day, another violent incident between fans and police took place at Independiente. Gas canisters and projectiles were launched across the fence In both cases, a refereeing decision incited the "aggrieved" fans.
